The quality of the free plug-ins you can get today is just amazing. Analog Obsession is definitely one of the developers who is at the top of the free plug-ins world, and is so with every right! Tunca managed to turn his reputation around from being regarded as a developer of overpriced, shitty and bugged plug-ins to one of the best free plug-in developers in the span of about 2 years, which is something not many can pull off. His decision to change his business model from a paid-for-licenses to a donation-based business model was a great one that seems to have paid off for both himself and everyone else. Almost every plug-in he has released since this change has been great at what it's supposed to do and I, for one, have been thoroughly enjoying them (aside from his guitar pedals/amps, haha). This one is no exception. The circuit modelling might not be the closest to the real hardware you can get, as there is no asymmetry between the left and right channel and you have no "analogue noise" for example, but I think it's the right choice to leave out the parts of the analogue circuit that is not intended to be there in the first place and instead focusing on trying to recreate the most important aspects like attack/release envelope characteristics and saturation. From what I understand, his "framework" or circuit modelling algorithm takes blueprints of hardware units and converts it into code which he then ties together with a UI etc. This could explain why the imperfections of the real hardware is not included as it wouldn't account for the different tolerances that certain parts of a real hardware unit has. This compressor/limiter has a really sweet and warm sound that makes it perfect for use on every type of instrument bus, and especially on vocals. The 3-band EQ in side-chain gives it tons of usability (try using it to heavily compress the highs!) and the limiter is perfect for catching stray transients. One last thing that I love about AA plug-ins is that they almost always include 4x oversampling (usually by clicking on the "Analog Obsession" logo), which is something you don't get in a lot of free plug-ins. If you haven't tried any of his plug-ins yet, I can definitely recommend them. A good starting point is to download the Brit Bundle, FET Bundle, NOS Bundle, CHANNEV, BUSTERse and SSQ. After he released CHANNEV, I started supporting him on Patreon and it was one of the easiest decisions I've made!

Not a fan of this one. For some reason it just seems to glue things in the most unpleasant way possible.

They work well - but they are basically the same standard textbook algorithms (for THD, ie) recycled with realistic looking GUIs and various controls. There is never any actual emulation happening with these.

These 3 plugins are unbelievable! Thanks AO!
Analog Obsession plugins are sounding great, however they are VERY glitchy when using Harrison Mixbus on mac os. Most of them crash the program when inserted on a channel, but seem to work on the busses OK. I cannot find any way to contact the developer directly without joining Patreon, which I don't really want to do until these will work for me. Happy to pay for these once they do. I know Mixbus is a lesser used DAW so I guess this is to be expected.....hopefully it will be fixed!
If you have Instagram just search for his channel and write him. He will answer :) I once noticed an issue with his plugin Lovend and wrote him. He wrote back. That's something I really like about him. :)
Thanks Willi, I contacted him through Instagram and he responded! Good stuff.

Really nice sidechain compressor. Works fine 64 bit, but had a few problems with a wrapped 32 bit version. I'd love to see a 3 band version of this plugin, low, mid, high with one sidechain input that you can apply (or not) to each band. To the best of my knowledge there isn't a decent freeware multiband compressor available at the minute. This is a really good single band compressor, however.
If you use Reaper go on the Reaper homepage and check the tutorial videos on how to create a custom multiband compressor. This could solve your problems . . .
TDR Nova is a free MB comp. Check it out, i really like it :)
Possibly good multiband compressors: MCS6 by J1000, ReaXcomp by Reaper, and COMP4 by Plektron. Cheers!
